SV Film Group hosts, Rev. Paul Mowry and our own 'Chef' Joey both graduated from NYU Film School and love finding interesting films to watch and discuss as a group.  The group meets downstairs in the Church Hall.  Parking is difficult so be sure to plan to walk or request a ride from Sausalito Village.

SPECIAL NOTE FROM JOEY ABOUT THIS FILM CHOICE:

A note from Joey about this month’s film selection

I liked this film a lot.  But it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.   I screened it into our January slot because it’s a big award winner already, and a serious contender for many Oscar awards as well.   While the film is critically acclaimed, I wanted to share a little bit so if it's not your cup of tea, you may know in advance.  (ie:  its not a sweet gentle film)

While not gratuitously violent, It’s a gritty film, and there are parts with nonstop action as the title “One battle after another” implies , and while most are not traditional battles, there are plenty of chaotic, politically charged action-thriller sequences.  The film sets out to tell the story of the ongoing consequences of past rebellions, presented as a series of escalating battles against an oppressive state and personal demons, with both paranoia and dark satire.

Ultimately, to me, this film eventually becomes about our main character Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio)  who has become a loving dad, and has left his militant past behind, and gone into hiding to raise his daughter in a safe, stable place. But, 15 years later his past catches up to him, and another battle starts, this time with his 15 year old daughter being targeted.

The film has been praised for its 5 star cast that has already won many awards.  It is being hailed as a groundbreaking cinematic experience with ambitious style, strong performances, and complex themes of resistance and rebellion. Many praise the film's political commentary and its parallels to current authoritarian elements in our government, dark humor, and thrilling action sequences. Paul Thomas Anderson's direction receives high praise, as well as the film's cinematography, soundtrack, and the performances are also very noteworthy,  many already having won awards.
The film is 2 hours 40 minutes long.   We’ll have two intermissions

So now you have a picture.
Hope to see you Wednesday.
-Joey
