NOTE:  CARSS is providing errand service during Covid-19 and hopes to return to providing rides as it becomes safe to do so.  Contact the program manager if you need groceries, medications or library books picked up.

In May 2015, Sausalito Village signed an agreement with the City of Sausalito to manage the newly created age friendly transportation program called CARSS which stands for Call A Ride for Sausalito Seniors.  It made good sense for SV to take on the management since we already provide volunteer transportation services for members.

How does CARSS work?

Vetted and trained volunteer Drivers provide FREE rides to residents who are 60 and older anywhere within the City, floating homes or Gateway Shopping Center between the hours of 10am and 2pm Monday through Friday.  Rides can be for ANY reason from a hair appointment to lunch at a friends house.  The idea is to keep our residents involved and active even when they can no longer navigate walking or driving our challenging terrain.

In 2016, rides were expanded to evening community wide events, mostly those sponsored by the Library.  This allows another segment of our residents who no longer drive after dark to still enjoy attending events.

There is crossover between the two programs since volunteer drivers who are vetted and trained for one program can choose to volunteer for both.  This has actually helped to increase the number of volunteers for Sausalito Village.  In addition, Village membership has continued to grow since we started managing CARSS.  This is mostly due to the fact that we are able to reach a greater number of senior residents through the City's channels to inform them about the benefits of SV.
